Welcome to Second Grade
The Second Grade curriculum is supplemented with a number of thematic units. These units encompass all the subject areas. The fall "Apple Unit" concludes with the grand production of the Johnny Appleseed play. Our "Gingerbread and Chocolate Unit" involves the children with the task of creating their own candy bars. During the winter "Penguin Unit" the children share their projects with the other members of the class as we celebrate "Black and White Day" eating Oreos and milk. Pasta becomes a favorite food especially when the second graders are involved in the making of pasta during their "Pasta Making Luncheon". The year concludes with our "Ice Cream Unit" during which the children create their ice cream sundaes.
Many people have remarked that the children "eat" their way through the Second Grade. This is very evident as you review the special activities that the children enjoy during the course of the school year.

Dear Second Grade Parents,
The second grade has began a thematic unit about "apples". In conjunction with this unit, we will be completing activities in language arts, math, social studies, science and art. In order to complete some of the activities for this unit on apples each child is asked to bring 2 apples (any variety) to school on Tuesday, September7. Please make sure that the apples are labeled with their variety name.
In math, the class is working on activities associated with addition and subtraction strategies and facts to 12. In order to reinforce your child's math progress, you should begin a nightly five minute flash card drill on the addition and subtraction facts to 12.
Our religion classes will focus on the concept of Jesus being with us at all times. The children will reflect on the lessons of Jesus being God's Son, Jesus founding the Church and how Jesus is with us through the sacraments.
In the area of language arts, the children have begun the first theme unit in their reading anthologies. This unit is entitled "Sharing Stories". Please refer to the Home Connection page that was sent home on Monday for more insight about this unit and the first selection. Make sure you go over with your child the meanings of the vocabulary words that appear at the bottom of this page. Your child will bring home a new "Home Connection" sheet each week that a new story is introduced.
Also, in the language arts area, the class will be introduced to the concepts of nouns (common and proper), possessive pronouns and action words (verbs). Our comprehension skills instruction will focus on comparing and contrasting, visualizing, drawing conclusions and making inferences.
During the next few weeks, in the areas of spelling and phonics, the children will review the blend sounds of "gl, bl, gr, dr,tr., nd, and st". The children brought home their first spelling word list on Monday. A new spelling word list is usually sent home every Monday. The children are to study them daily and the parents need to sign the spelling sheet each day on the designated lines. The children MUST bring the word list back to school each day for homework credit. Spelling words written 3 times each will be due on Wednesday. Paper will be provided for this assignment. On Wednesday, the spelling sentences will be sent home and the children must write each sentence 2 times (paper will be provided) and return them to school on Friday as part of their homework assignment. The final spelling test will be given on Friday.
Many of your children might have already shared with you about the "credit card" system that we have in place in the second grade. This is a technique that I use to reinforce good behavior. If a child displays proper behavior, he or she may be rewarded with a stamp on
their "credit card". These stamps may then be used to purchase items at the Second Grade Store. In order for me to have the store "well stocked" with interesting items, I am asking parents to help me supply the store throughout the school year. This is an opportunity for you to get rid of those extra birthday party prizes, "Happy Meal" toys, extra fancy pencils, coloring books, small stuffed animals, etc. If you have any items that would be appropriate, please put them in a bag, address it to Mrs. Chiricuzio and send it to school with your child.
I would like to thank all the parents who have responded to my letter about sharing particular information about their child. This information has given me a tremendous amount of help in understanding the children and their specific needs.
Please remember "Back to School Night" is this Thursday, September 2 for K - 5 parents. There will be a general meeting in the Event Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. followed by classroom visitation.
See all of you on Thursday!
Fondly,
Mrs. Carol Chiricuzio
